Achterflaptekst:
“As a child growing up on a ranch, | and other rural children like me did not enjoy the luxury of a radio, a phonograph, or even books to read, and television was unheard of. Yet we had something richer, more endearing and enduring. Storytelling and venturing into the world of magic and the supernatural provided entertainment at its best. Some of us found the stories credible; others shrugged them off as far-fetched. Yet we were all spell-bound,” — Nasario Garcia, from his preface.
'He got as close as he could to observe the spectacle; his eyes could hardly believe what he saw. Circled around the huge bonfire were many witches dancing and making all kinds of gestures amidst laughs, screams, and bursts of laughter as they sang all together.' - Tomas Lozano, Albuquerque, New Mexico, from And Sunday, Seven.
Recounted in Spanish and in English translation, these tales of sorcerers, fiendish witches, La Llorona, the vanishing hitchhiker, ghostly apparitions, and balls of fire are sure to beguile readers of all ages and backgrounds. The sixty-four narrators in Brujerias range in age from seventeen to ninety-eight. Their stories come from Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas as well as Spain and Latin America. Showing how fascination with the magical connects Spain to Latin America and Latin America to the United States, they also illuminate a rich and reverberating tradition within Hispanic heritage of the American Southwest. Included are biographical information about the narrators and a glossary highlighting the regional Spanish dialect of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado.
'Just when we thought that our folklore was giving way to modernization and dying out, along comes this remarkable collection, which bears witness to the perseverance of tradition and yet is utterly contemporary in its transnational impulse.'— Erlinda Gonzales-Berry, Professor of Chicano/a and Latino/a Studies, Oregon State University.
'Nasario Garcia is one of a small group of contemporary scholars who have devoted their research to the methodical study of the rich oral traditions of Hispanics in New Mexico, southern Colorado, and elsewhere. Brujerias is his most ambitious project, for which he deserves our greatest appreciation and highest admiration.'— Chuck Tatum, University of Arizona.
'Dr. Garcia’s dual-language anthology is just like sitting at abuelitos’ knees listening to the past come to life. This is a scholarly, spell-binding collection of things-that-go-bump-in-the-night; it is truly a must for any serious collection.'— Larry Torres, University of New Mexico-Taos.
Nasario Garcia, a native New Mexican and leading folklorist in his state, has produced many works on New Mexican literature and folklore, including Old Las Vegas: Hispanic Memories from the New Mexico Meadowlands and Pláticas: Conversations with Hispano Writers of New Mexico.
