Achterflaptekst:
This book by Dr. Gérard Encausse, better known by his nomen mysticum Papus to his readers and followers, can be read at a number of levels. Firstly, he has an almost poetic style of writing, and enchants us with his colorful prose. At another, he provides us with a fascinating — and very personal — insight into life in Paris at the end of the 19th Century: a period full of hope and excitement; a period of invention and enormous strides in knowledge; a period which saw the rise of many Esoteric Societies and self-indulgence; but it was also a time of great fear, when war seemed only a broken treaty away. Finally, with this treatise he provides us with one of the most important esoteric books written in the late 1800s.
This book is the first, and perhaps the only one, which attempts to provide us with a complete working approach to Solomonic Magic. Having spent many years studying Kabbalah, Hermeticism, Theurgy, Religion, Freemasonry and Magic, particularly through the study of manuscripts and books at the French National Library, he brings us a comprehensive list of most of the important Grimoires and books on the subject of Magic, together with a summary of each. His purpose, he tells us, is to save the interested reader much expense in terms of both time and money by bringing all the key materials together into one book. But it is his work in assembling the teachings found in a number of Grimoires and Clavicles into a harmonized set of instructions, and his belief that these teachings can be adapted to modern use, which really makes this book unique.
Papus was also determined to have the study of Magic taken seriously, and spent his time both attacking those societies and people who he believes bring the subject into disrepute; and by bringing his extensive knowledge of physiology, neurology and hypnotherapy to support what he terms his experiments in Magic.
This book, previously unavailable in English, should prove an invaluable addition both to the serious practitioner and the armchair Magician.
Piers A. Vaughan is active in a number of esoteric societies, as well as Freemasonry. His interest in the Esoteric Orders of the 18th to the 20th Centuries has led him to produce a number of papers on the subject, and to translate some of the key works from French into English, of which this book is one.
